Solidarity and Peace.org was originally started by members of the War Resisters League in the St. Augustine, Florida area to oppose the war in Iraq. We initially called ourselves the St. Augustine War Resisters. However, we were soon brought face-to-face with what we had always known - that all issues are, fundamentally, labor issues. We know that there is no peace without justice for all. We believe that we, as working people, have more in common with working people in Iraq, Afghanistan and Iran than we do do with our own political leaders. We believe that the international working class can save the human race. We are pacifists and reject violence as a means of achieving social change. We are adherents of the type of proactive, non-violent civil disobedience practiced by Mohandas Gandhi and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We reject the idea that we can be "secure" by giving up our freedoms. Life is risk. We are opposed to the wage system and believe that the working people of the world have the courage and the intelligence to take control of and make decisions about the means of production to insure that there is a world for future generations. We reject the idea that we exist solely to consume for the profit and pleasures of the owners. We believe in the old adage, "From each according to their abilities, to each according to their needs."
We know that the governments of the world are not yet ready to give up their weapons and armies and that the few who own most of the world's resources are not ready to share. We know that we will not achieve our goals in our lifetime. However, we do believe that each incremental step we take will enable our grandchildren and their children to come closer to a world where all people truly are brothers and sisters and that all people will have their share of the resources that our world offers.
